Supply chain management: a structured literature review and implications for future research

ABSTRACT

Purpose – The field of supply chain management (SCM) has historically been informed by knowledge from narrow functional areas. While some effort towards producing a broader organizational perspective has been made, nonetheless, SCM continues to be largely eclectic with little consensus on its conceptualization and research methodological bases. This paper seeks to clarify aspects of this emerging perspective. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 100 randomly selected refereed journal articles were systematically analyzed. Findings – A number of key findings emerged: the field is a relatively “new” one; several disciplines claim ownership of the field; consensus is lacking on the definition of the term; contextual focus ismostly on the manufacturing industry; predominantly “process” conceptual framing prevails; research methods employed are mostly analytical conceptual, empirical surveys or case studies; the positivist research paradigmatic stance is prevalent; and theories related to transaction cost economics and competitive advantage dominate. Originality/value – This review identifies various conceptual and research methodological characteristics of SCM. From a philosophy of knowledge perspective, it is suggested that SCM be framed as a Lakatosian Research Program, for this has the best potential to assist in the development of SCM body of knowledge in a sustainable way into the future.

INTRODUCTION

In recent years, the area of supply chain management (SCM) has become very popular. This is evidenced by marked increases in practitioner and academic publications, conferences, professional development programs and university courses in the area. While interest in SCM is immense, it is clear that much of the knowledge about SCM resides in narrow functional silos such as purchasing, logistics, IT and marketing. At least partly as a result of this, there appears to be little consensus on the conceptual and research methodological bases of SCM. This has contributed to the existence of a number of gaps in the knowledge base of the field. Firstly, from a conceptualization perspective, the definition of the term is unclear and the impact of theoretical diversity is such that it is doubtful SCM is based on a coherent theory.

هدف – زمینه مديريت زنجيره تأمين (SCM) از لحاظ تاريخي از دانش فضاي محدود استفاده شده است. با وجودی که برخی تلاش ها برای ایجاد دیدگاه وسیع تر سازمانی صورت گرفته است، با این وجود، SCM همچنان تا حد زیادی متضاد با اجماع اندکی در مورد مفهوم سازی و مبانی روش تحقیق است. این مقاله به دنبال روشن کردن جنبه های این دیدگاه در حال ظهور است. طراحی / روش شناسی / رویکرد – در مجموع 100 مقاله به صورت دائمی منتخب داوری مورد بررسی قرار گرفتند. یافته ها – تعدادی از یافته های کلیدی پدید آمده است: زمینه یک نسبتا “جدید” است؛ چندین رشته ادعا مالکیت این میدان را دارند اجماع در تعریف اصطلاح فاقد آن است؛ تمرکز متمرکز عمدتا بر صنعت تولیدی است؛ غالبا فریم مفهومی “فرآیند” غالب است؛ روشهای تحقیقاتی اغلب تحلیلی مفهومی، تجربی یا مطالعات موردی هستند؛ موضع پارادایمی پژوهشی مثبت گرا شایع است؛ و نظریه های مربوط به اقتصاد هزینه های معامله و مزیت های رقابتی غالب می شوند. اصالت / ارزش – این بررسی ویژگی های مختلف مفهومی و روش شناختی SCM را شناسایی می کند. از دیدگاه فلسفه دانش، پیشنهاد می شود که SCM به عنوان یک برنامه تحقیقاتی Lakatosian طراحی شود، زیرا این بهترین پتانسیل برای کمک به توسعه دانش SCM در راه پایدار در آینده است.
