Undergraduate music students depression, anxiety and stress levels:a study from Turkey

The aim of this study was to assess the depression, anxiety and stress levels of undergraduate music students and to describe the mood differences with respect to some of the demographic variables. The study group consisted of 160 participants 33.7% of whom were male. The correlations between depression-anxiety (r=.81; p<.01), anxiety-stress (r=.85; p<.01) and depression-stress (r=.78; p<.01) were significant. There was no statistically significant relationship between gender and depression, anxiety or stress. The depression, anxiety and stress levels of 4 th grade students were found to be higher than others. Students with bad economic status had higher depression levels than those with moderate or good economic status
Relationship between emotional intelligence and aggression[taliem.ir]

Relationship between emotional intelligence and aggression: A systematic review

Emotional intelligence (EI), defined as a set of abilities for perceiving, using, understanding, and managing emotions, has been associated with a better psychosocial adjustment. Empirical studies have found a positive relationship of EI with social function and a negative one with conflicts in social relationships. The purpose of this study was to systematically review available evidence on the relationship between EI and aggression. PubMed, PsycINFO and Scopus were searched for relevant articles in English and Spanish, and 19 eligible studies were identified. Together, these studies provide strong evidence that emotional abilities and aggressive behavior are negatively related: people with higher EI show less aggression. This relationship appears to be consistent across ages (from childhood to adulthood), cultures, types of aggression, and EI measures. Few studies have assessed EI using ability tests, and none of the eligible studies was longitudinal or experimental. These findings are discussed in relation to future research on aggression and strategies to prevent and manage it based on EI
The effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on offspring outcomes[taliem.ir]

The effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on offspring outcomes

Objective. To evaluate the possible association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and offspring outcomes of birth weight, pre-term birth, remediation, low scholastic achievement, regular smoking, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct problems while controlling for similar behaviors in parents. Methods. Using telephone interviews, data were collected, in 2001 and 2004, as a part of two United States offspring-of-twins projects. Fathers, who were twins participating in the Vietnam Era Twin Registry, their female spouse and their offspring were interviewed — information on 1,342 unique pregnancies in mothers with a history of regular smoking was utilized for these analyses. The association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and birth weight, pre-term birth, remediation, low scholastic achievement, regular smoking, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder while controlling for similar behaviors in parents, was examined using regression. Results. Maternal smoking during pregnancy was associated with decreased birth weight, low scholastic achievement, regular smoking and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and offspring attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was explained by maternal attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Maternal smoking during pregnancy was also associated with earlier age of offspring initiation of smoking and onset of regular smoking. Conclusions. Maternal smoking during pregnancy may influence certain offspring outcomes via mechanisms that are independent from genetic risk attributable to comorbid conditions. Assisting expecting mothers with their smoking cessation efforts will likely provide widespread health benefits to both mother and offspring

Creating high performance teamwork in organizations

The adoption of teams continues to increase in almost every domain of modern work life. In the current article we review evidence of the complexity of modern work, industry trends in the use of teams, and the challenges of achieving the full potential of organizational work teams. We aimed to meaningfully move forward the science of high performance teamwork by assembling a focused set of review articles in the present special issue. We consider four themes that capture the articles in this special issue and avenues for achieving the full potential of teams: (1) work across boundaries; (2) build effective team processes and states; (3) manage team development issues; and (4) leverage human capital. Collectively, the contents of this special issue offer important new opportunities for advancing future research and for making a practical difference in the effectiveness of teams in organizations. We identify six areas in which future research efforts in high performance teamwork should be directed based on “realities” that, in our view, need to be addressed

Parenting interventions for childhood chronic illness: A review and recommendations for intervention design and delivery

Every day, thousands of children suffer the effects of chronic health conditions and families struggle with illness management and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment. Many parents experience difficulties with their caregiving role and lack confidence in their ability to manage their child’s illness and ensure the child’s well-being. While there is consistent evidence as to the extent and impact of childhood chronic illness, there is a paucity of evidence-based parenting approaches to help children with chronic health conditions and their families. This paper provides a narrative review of the current literature to examine relationships between chronic childhood illness, emotional and behavioural disorders and parenting. Key guidelines and recommendations for the development of evidence-based parenting programs for parents of children affected by chronic health conditions are provided

On the incidence and prevalence of child maltreatment: a research agenda

Research on child maltreatment epidemiology has primarily been focused on population surveys with adult respondents. Far less attention has been paid to analyzing reported incidents of alleged child maltreatment and corresponding agency responses. This type of research is however indispensable to know how well a child protection system works and if the most vulnerable are identified and served. Notable findings of child maltreatment epidemiological research are summarized and directions for future studies discussed
Leadership 5 Communication The Relations of Leaders’[taliem.ir]

Leadership = Communication? The Relations of Leaders’ Communication Styles with Leadership Styles, Knowledge Sharing and Leadership Outcomes

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between leaders’ communication styles and charismatic leadership, human-oriented leadership (leader’s consideration), task-oriented leadership (leader’s initiating structure), and leadership outcomes. Methodology A survey was conducted among 279 employees of a governmental organization. The following six main communication styles were operationalized: verbal aggressiveness, expressiveness, preciseness, assuredness, supportiveness, and argumentativeness. Regression analyses were employed to test three main hypotheses. Findings In line with expectations, the study showed that charismatic and human- oriented leadership are mainly communicative, while task-oriented leadership is significantly less communicative. The communication styles were strongly and differentially related to knowledge sharing behaviors, perceived leader performance, satisfaction with the leader, and subordinate’s team commitment. Multiple regression analyses showed that the leadership styles mediated the relations between the communication styles and leadership outcomes. However, leader’s preciseness explained variance in perceived leader performance and satisfaction with the leader above and beyond the leadership style variables. Implications This study offers potentially invaluable input for leadership training programs by showing the importance of leader’s supportiveness, assuredness, and preciseness when communicating with subordinates. Originality/value Although one of the core elements of leadership is interpersonal communication, this study is one of the first to use a comprehensive communication styles instrument in the study of leadership

Learners’ Learning Style Classification related to IQ and Stress based on EEG

The importance to recognize a learner’s Learning Style (LS) is ever-essential as to substantiate success in a teaching and learning process. At the same time, the learner’s IQ and personality traits such as Stress also being actively investigated in educational research as educationists consistently attempted to understand learners in a more adept way. Nevertheless, the effort was usually confined to psychoanalysis test. With the emergence of Electroencephalography (EEG) technology, learner’s brain characteristics could be accessed directly and the outcome may well hand-in-hand supported the conventional test. In this study, the participants (n= 80) are grouped to the LS of Diverger, Assimilator, Converger or Accommodator using the Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory (KLSI). Subsequently, their brain signals were then recorded using EEG at resting baseline state of Open Eyes and Closed Eyes. A statistical tool of SPSS 16 was used for data analysis purposes. Using the Two Step Cluster analysis, the participants’ EEG datasets were 100% classified to the corresponding LS. Then, EEG Alpha band was selected to link between LS, IQ and Stress. The study concluded that Diverger is the LS with highest IQ while Converger and Diverger are the LS that prone to Stress
