Automated Demand Response From Home Energy Management System Under Dynamic Pricing and Power and Comfort Constraints

This paper presents a comprehensive and general optimization-based home energy management controller, incorporating several classes of domestic appliances includingdeferrable, curtailable, thermal, and critical ones. The operations of the appliances are controlled in response to dynamic price signals to reduce the consumer’s electricity bill whilst minimizing the daily volume of curtailed energy, and therefore considering the user’s comfort level. To avoid shifting a large portion of consumer demand toward the least price intervals, which could create network issues due to loss of diversity, higher prices are applied when the consumer’s demand goes beyond a prescribed power threshold. The arising mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem is solved in an iterative manner rolling throughout the day to follow the changes in the anticipated price signals and the variations in the controller inputs while information is updated. The results from different realistic case studies show the effectiveness of the proposed controller in minimizing the household’s daily electricity bill while preserving comfort level, as well as preventing creation of new least-price peaks.

Design and Development of Single Switch High Step-Up DC-DC Converter

In this paper, a new single switch high step-up dc-dc converter with high voltage gain is proposed. The proposed topology is developed by combining boost and SEPIC converter with diode - capacitor circuit to reduce the stress across the semiconductor devices. The proposed converter produces low switching voltage and hence it improves its efficiency. The operating principle and the steady state performance analysis are discussed. The performance of the converter is validated by developing a prototype circuit with input voltage of 30 V, output voltage of 300 V and output power rating of 250 W. The theoretical analysis and experimental results concludes the proposed converter is suitable for high voltage applications.

New technology innovations with potential for space applications Kumar Krishen

Human exploration and development of space is being pursued by spacefaring nations to explore, use, and enable the development of space and expand the human experience there. The goals include: increasing human knowledge of nature’s processes using the space environment; exploring and settling the solar system; achieving routine space travel; and enriching life on Earth through living and working in space. A crucial aspect of future space missions is the development of infrastructure to optimize safety, productivity, and costs. A major component of mission execution is operations management. NASA’s International Space Station is providing extensive experience in both infrastructure and operations. In view of this, a vigorously organized approach is needed to implement successful space-, planet-, and ground-based research and operations that entails wise and efficient use of technical and human resources. Many revolutionary technologies being pursued by researchers and technologists may be vital in making space missions safe, reliable, cost-effective, and productive. These include: ionic polymer–metal composite technology; solid-state lasers; time-domain sensors and communication systems; high-temperature superconductivity; nanotechnology; variable specific impulse magneto plasma rocket; fuzzy logic; wavelet technology; and neural networks. An overview of some of these will be presented, along with their application to space missions.
Alleviation of rolling contact fatigue on Sweden’s heavy haul railway[taliem.ir]

Alleviation of rolling contact fatigue on Sweden’s heavy haul railway

A test has been undertaken on Sweden’s Malmbanan, or iron ore railway, to reduce rolling contact fatigue (RCF) damage by developing a preventative maintenance regime involving routine grinding of the rails. In just the first 2 years of the test, the total cost of grinding plus rail replacements was reduced by almost 40%, while both the rail and track quality generally improved immensely. Although it may not be possible to reproduce such savings everywhere that RCF damage occurs, some lessons from the test are of general relevance. In particular, the development of even existing surface-initiated defects can effectively be halted by grinding and thereafter regularly reinstating, a profile which substantially removes loading from those cracks. In this test, the rate of metal removal by grinding was about 0.2 mm per 25 MGT. Methods were also developed for objectively monitoring the transverse and longitudinal profiles of the ground rail, and the depth of metal removed from the rail, i.e. the overall grinding “quality”. It would appear that the desired benefits of grinding can be obtained even if deviations of the transverse profile from a desired reference profile exceed specified limits over a significant fraction of the track.

Research on Active Suspension Control Strategy Based on The Model With Parameters of Hydraulic System

The disadvantage that ordinary active suspension model is in low accuracy and practicability which is caused by the neglect of actuator motion is brought forth through analyzing the assemble of active suspension. The model including hydraulic system parameters is obtained through building the active suspension hydraulic system model. The weighting coefficient matrix of car body acceleration, suspension deflection, and tyre displacement is determined through analyzing the principle of LQG control and the active suspension LQG control strategy is brought out. The conclusion that active suspension promote more control stability and riding comfort than passive suspension and PID control is made by simulation and comparing with passive suspension and active suspension PID control. The force output amplitude performance of the LQG control is better than the PID control which can be get from the force signals.
NON-LINEAR RESONANCES IN THE FORCED RESPONSES[taliem.ir]

NON-LINEAR RESONANCES IN THE FORCED RESPONSES OF PLATES, PART II: ASYMMETRIC RESPONSES OF CIRCULAR PLATES

The dynamic analogue of the von Karman equations is used to study the forced response, including asymmetric vibrations and traveling waves, of a clamped circular plate subjected to harmonic excitations when the frequency of excitation is near one of the natural frequencies. The method of multiple scales, a perturbation technique, is used to solve the non-linear governing equations. The approach presented provides a great deal of insight into the nature of the non-linear forced resonant response. It is shown that in the absence of internal resonance (i.e., a combination of commensurable natural frequencies) or when the frequency of excitation is near one of the lower frequencies involved in the internal resonance, the steady state response can only have the form of a standing wave. However, when the frequency of excitation is near the highest frequency involved in the internal resonance it is possible for a traveling wave component of the highest mode to appear in the steady state response.

Drilling of carbon composites using a one shot drill bit. Part I: Five stage representation of drilling and factors affecting maximum force and torque

The thrust force and torque produced during drilling contain important information related to the quality of the hole and the wear of thedrill bit . In this paper, the force and torque produced during drilling of carbon fibre using a ‘one shot’ drill bit is investigated. The signals in the time domain were divided into stages and common problems and defects associated with each stage discussed. It is also shown how tool wear and thickness of the workpiece affect the thrust force and torque throughout the drilling process. The findings of this paper are used to develop a mathematical model of the maximum thrust force and torque as described on Part II of this paper and are a valuable reference for future optimisation of drilling carbon composites with a ‘oneshot’ drill bit.
Effect of PWHT cycles on fatigue crack growth and toughness of[taliem.ir]

Effect of PWHT cycles on fatigue crack growth and toughness of quenched and tempered pressure vessel steels

Transportable pressure vessels, commonly manufactured from quenched and tempered (QT) steels, require mandatory postweld heat treatment (PWHT) regardless of plate thickness. During their life, transportable pressure vessels may have up to 4 PWHT cycles at temperatures between 540 and 590 ◦C, and concerns have emerged about possible effects on the mechanical properties of the base (parent) plate. This paper reports work on the resistance to fatigue crack growth, impact toughness and CTOD fracture toughness of two types of QT steels. The parent metal region was examined for both steels, and then exposed to temperatures and times in the PWHT range. Although there was a marginal decrease in the resistance to fatigue crack growth for up to four postweld heat treatment cycles, there was a significant decrease in impact toughness and CTOD fracture toughness.

Acoustic emission based drill condition monitoring during drilling of glass/phenolic polymeric composite using wavelet packet transform

Monitoring of tool condition on the basis of sensor signals requires a selection of suitable signal processing technique and monitoring index, to assess the tool condition. In this paper, wavelet packet transform is used as a tool, to characterise the acoustic emission signals released from glass/phenolic polymeric composite during drilling. The results show that the selected monitoring indices from the wavelet packet coefficients are capable of detecting the drill condition effectively.
