ABSTRACT
Natural gas storage in salt caverns has unique charisma. The low base gas, high injection capacity and storage capacity have led to a growing trend for salt caverns to be used. The volume of salt caverns is between 5,000 to 1,000,000 cubic meters. The depths of these caverns vary from 300-2000 m and their shape in a wide range. In this article, the methods of excavation of this species from caves have been investigated. Also, safety, environmental and economic aspects were studied. The results show that salt caverns are suitable for storage of gas.
INTRODUCTION
In recent years, natural gas consumption has grown dramatically and has become the world’s largest source of energy supply. Increasing consumption and various uses of gas have led to an increase in demand changes over time. One of the ways to supply this variable is storage. In general, salt cavities are formed inside saline sediments. These salt deposits are found in two forms of salt domes and salt layers. In some cases salt domes with a diameter of 1.6 km and a height of 9000 m are found. Gas storage in saline layers is much more expensive than salt domes. When a layer or dome of salt was found to be suitable for storage. The salt cavity inside it should be created, which is based on the use of water to dissolve salt and create a large cavity. This is done by digging a well inside the dome or layer and circulating the water inside the well to dissolve the salt. The formation of a droplet inside the dome and salt layers is very expensive, but if produced, the rate of gas production is very high and there is also a need for a very small gas base, accounting for about 25% of the total gas injection.
