ABSTRACT
The lack of wind ash production in Iran and the ambiguities regarding the activity and uniformity of natural pozzolans are obstacles to the achievement of roller concrete mixtures. Therefore, another suitable substitute, which can be considered as an additive, is a super-pozzolan called silica soot, which is produced as a by-product of the Ferrosilicon industry. In this paper, the results of laboratory studies carried out to evaluate the effect of various percentages of silica fume in improving the quality of roller concrete with low to moderate cement materials (110kg / m3 and 80kg / m3) are presented. The results show a significant effect on the compressive strength and tensile strength of roller concrete mixtures. Improvement of resistance between 25% and 60% was achieved by replacing silicon soot from 5 to 15% cementation material. Also, the permeability tests performed on the samples indicate a significant decrease in permeability due to the application of silica soot.
INTRODUCTION
Roller Concrete is a relatively new method in damping using highly bonded concrete mixtures with vibrating roller capacities. The significant technical and economic benefits of this method have led to an ever-increasing number and height of roller concrete dams in the last two decades. The amount of cement in mortars of concrete roller bearings is kept to a minimum, in order to reduce the problems caused by the production of heat in concrete and prevent the formation of thermal cracks. Reducing the amount of cement will also reduce the resistance and increase the permeability to the roller concrete. Therefore, in order to provide the desired resistance and permeability, as well as to reduce the potential of thermal cracking in concrete, the application of pozzolan, especially ash ash (PFA) in Roller concrete mixes are commonly used. Silicon soot is in fact silicon (Sio2) non-crystalline, which is extracted as soot from arc furnaces in fossil fuel production plants. The application of this material in the concrete industry began largely from the 1970s and the Scandinavian Region and is now widely used in various countries to improve concrete properties. Silica fume is a very active substance because of the high purity of its amorphous silica and its very fine particles (about 0.2mm). Silica fume reduces the porosity of the cement paste and also reduces the bonding between the pores and, as a result, decreases the permeability of the concrete.
