ABSTRACT
This paper presents a new method for solving transient Eddy current problems in EMAT non-destructive testing calculations. Using a linear approximation of differential operators, problem’s underlying differential equation is discretized in space, while being kept continuous in time; then Picard Method is exploited to solve the resulting equation numerically. Results are compared to analytical models and previous formulations and good agreement is found.
INTRODUCTION
Electromagnetic acoustic effect is a physical process that can be used for generating and receiving ultrasonic waves . Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs) exploit this phenomenon in order to perform non destructive tests. Many non destructive testing applications have enjoyed contactless nature of EMATs, which make them important instruments in harsh environments where other means of ultrasonic testing are unavailable. Despite being used in industry for more than 40 years and even more history of academic inspection , EMAT models are still far from perfect. One of major interest points in EMATs is modeling of generated Eddy currents. Study of this phenomenon has a history even older than EMAT, but only recently there have been attempts for deeper analysis. EMAT consists of a permanent or electric magnet to introduce static magnetic field and a current carrying coil that leads to induced current at surface skin depth of material. Generation and detection of ultrasound are provided by coupling between electromagnetic fields and elastic field in the surface of the material, which is usually described as Lorentz force. It transfers the electromagnetic energy to mechanical energy, through a few millimeters spacing between material and magnet. EMAT can be configured to measure different modes of elastic waves and one of its advantages is that provides a wide ange of wave propagation modes to meet various measurement needs compared to other ultrasonic testing.
