Agricultural sector and industrial agglomeration

ABSTRACT

In many developing countries, agriculture hires at least as many workers as manufacturing industries. We investigate an economic geography model in which agricultural goods are costly to transport and in which manufactures hire labor from the local agricultural sector as unskilled labor. Our conclusions show that the parameters in the agricultural sector are crucial to determine the spatial configuration of economic activity. We provide an analytic treatment to the model. The location equilibria are compared with the first and second best outcomes.

INTRODUCTION

The role of agricultural transport costs and markets is an important issue in the urban– rural development of many less developed countries where an important part of the population is devoted to agriculture. In 1989, agricultural population included more than 60% of total  population in India, China and the majority of African countries; it accounted for more than 40% in the majority of non-oil and non-OECD Asian countries and more than 30% in most South American countries By its emphasis on manufacturing sector, the new economic  geography literature has neglected to study the role of the agricultural sector in the process of agglomeration of economic activity between the regions of the world. Still, agriculture represents an important part of the economy in most developing countries and it seems justifiable to new economic geography results with respect to a proper modeling of the agricultural sector that supplies unskilled workers. To this aim, the present paper extends the model of Ottaviano et al. (2002) by adding the agricultural sector and requirement for unskilled labor. In our setup, the agricultural products are costly to transport and manufacturers hire labor from the local agricultural sector as unskilled labor. The second assumption is consistent with the fact that people move from agricultural area to urban area in developing countries because they find jobs in manufacturing sector. We show that agricultural transport costs and local-unskilled labor requirements in manufacturing sector act as a dispersion force.

چکیده

مقدمه
