ABSTRACT
In this research, the effect of the structure of the mixture of bentonite and sand on the pure-suction-stress behavior-volume variation has been investigated. Samples containing 15 and 25% by weight of bentonite were prepared and the initial moisture content was optimized and ± 5% optimum moisture content was applied and tested for testing in the device. Free flood tests (erosion) and contraction (drying) were performed periodically. And on the samples were consolidated before and after the test period. With the aim of improving the studied soil and reducing the rate of inflation and contraction, a mixture of sand and bentonite with different percentages of potassium silicate was fixed and all experiments were repeated. The results of the experiments showed that with increasing number of aging and drying periods, the percentage of inflation and contraction decreases. Also, with increasing initial moisture content, the potential for inflammation decreases.
INTRODUCTION
Mechanical properties of most soils change with increasing humidity and saturation, and this phenomenon is known to geotechnical engineers. However, in some soils due to increased humidity, special phenomena occur, which sometimes leads to major damages in construction projects. These soils can be called “water-sensitive soils”. For example, such soils can be from swellable soils, divergent soils, trapped soils, as well as soils containing a high amount of salts sensitive to water, such as salt. The extent of swollen soils and divergent soils, as well as the complexity of their behavior in contact with water, is more than other sensitive soils. Soils that are swollen are soils that are volumetric and so swollen due to the absorption of water. The pressure caused by the swelling of these soils can lead to a complete failure of light buildings, covering irrigation channels and flooring, and so on. In this study, swelling is due to water absorption, and inflation caused by frost and swelling due to the reduction of effective stress such as loading or inflation caused by the crystallization of salt crystals and … are phenomena that are not considered here. To be In fact, swollen soils can act in the opposite direction to the consolidation action. The best definition of the phenomenon of inflation is the physical and chemical reaction of the soil and the environment, where the amount of inflation depends on the intensity of gravity and physical and chemical retaliation. The phenomenon of inflation is a relatively reversible phenomenon, ie, the soil shrinks when moisture decreases. It is therefore natural that here, while investigating the phenomenon of inflation, we must pay attention to the phenomenon of contraction. One of the most common conditions in soil swell is the dry and dry periods (rainfall and heat seasons), which has a significant effect on swelling and soil contraction. Investigating and controlling soil behavior during these periods prevents damages such as cracking and deformation. On the other hand, given that the phenomenon of inflation is due to the change in the physical and chemical properties of the soil, the study of soil behavior is necessary under the influence of stabilizers that cause changes in soil characteristics.
