ABSTRACT
Spot resistance welding (RSW) plays an important role in assembling automotive parts and extending the use of galvanized sheets. Along with the expansion of the use of coated sheets, especially galvanized sheets, the life of welding electrodes has been considered. In this research, an investigation was made on unused and consumed electrodes that included metallography and observation of the structure by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, macroscopic and microscopic microscopy. Investigations show that the hardness of the samples used at the tip of the electrodes (welding site) is lower than that of the other regions, and also the metallographic image shows that the seeds in these areas have been shifted from the pivot and the column to the co-axis. Also, zinc penetration and the formation of rice alloys at the coupling point increase the electrode’s resistance and excessive heat, resulting in rapid change in shape and decrease the electrode’s life.
INTRODUCTION
In automotive industry, galvanized sheets are used to increase the corrosion resistance of the body. The main method of bonding these sheets is point resistance welding. Due to the high thermal and electrical conductivity of copper, other electrodes used in this method are mainly based on copper, which is the major alloy in this method, Cu-Cr-Zr. Due to the durability of the alloy, it has an optimum strength, in addition to acceptable thermal and electrical conductivity. Increasing the strength and hardness of these alloys during the debris will lead to the formation and presence of sediments. Sediments in the area of this alloy are usually rich in chromium-coherent sediments with bcc structure and Cu3Zr / Cu4Zr sediments. Due to the fact that zinc (Zn) coated on the sheet surface has a higher thermal and electrical conductivity than steel, the welding of this type of steel is associated with more problems than uncoated steel, and in order to achieve an acceptable quality boot button, And more time is needed. In addition, the zinc penetration in the electrode and the formation of rice alloys at its tip, due to the change in the contact resistance of the electrode, increases the heat produced and, as a result, the electrode is forced to withstand more heat.
