ABSTRACT
The separation of moving objects in video images is the first step in extracting information for many image processing applications such as traffic monitoring, video surveillance and tracking of individuals. The shadows of moving objects can destroy their appearance and geometry; on the other hand, they may cause the interconnection of several objects together. Such a problem would have adverse effects on many of the subsequent processes, such as detecting, categorizing, and determining the spatial location of objects. In this paper, a new strategy for detecting and removing shadows in a series of traffic images is presented based on wavelet transform. This technique is used in the color scheme of the HSV system. The proposed algorithm was tested on the traffic scene on vehicles, which resulted in improved diagnosis and reduced erroneous alerts.
INTRODUCTION
Motion analysis is one of the areas of interest in machine vision and image processing. Research in this field has led to widespread applications in care and monitoring. Tracking is one of the most important tools in motion analysis. One of the important issues in tracking moving objects is the problem of their shadow. The shadows of moving objects have been damaging their appearance and geometry, and may even cause the interconnection of several objects with each other. Such a problem will have adverse effects on many of the subsequent processes, such as detection, classification and location of objects. So far, several algorithms have been proposed to detect and remove the moving shadow. These algorithms
It is possible to divide into two general models based on color spectrum. Model-based algorithms use scene geometric information, objects, and light source location to remove shadows. Hsieh et al. Used the feature of the road lines, and to uncover unwanted shadows, an algorithm based on these lines. Yoneya and his colleagues have proposed a two-dimensional (2-D) model for the body and shade attached to represent objects, instead of shadow separation. In another method, the background is first separated from the frame, then the shadow is separated by the horizontal, vertical, date and time edges of the images. These algorithms are not practical in cases where the model of road lines, shape of objects and radiation conditions are not known.
