ABSTRACT
Aluminoid coatings are a group of intrusive coatings that are widely applied to enhance oxidation and hot corrosion resistance on nickel base super alloys. One of the limitations of the use of these types of coatings is the depletion of Ni in the substrate of aluminide coating due to the atomic influence of Ni towards Al. In this study, a thin layer of Ni in thicknesses of 7 and 14 microns was first applied to the IN-738LC superalloy by electroplating. Then, the aluminizing coating was carried out using a low-active box cementation at 1100 ° C. SEMs equipped with EDX were used for microstructural analysis. The results show that with the application of the initial layer Ni does not occur in the substrate of aluminide coating, the depletion of the Ni element is not observed, and thus the probability of forming a crude phase σ also decreases.
INTRODUCTION
Intrusive Aluminous coatings were first used in 1957 by the Cementation Cobalt Blades made by General Electric. The advantages of these coatings can be low cost and ability to apply on complex shapes, which has made these coatings to be considered as the most common type of superalloy protective coatings. The basis of increasing the resistance to hot corrosion and oxidation of aluminide intrusive coatings is the formation of a CoAl or NiAl aluminide layer with high oxidation resistance on the alloy surface. This layer is produced by the reaction of Al with Ni or Co in the base alloy. Different methods have been used for the application of aluminide coatings, including the method of box cementation, gas phase method, slurry method, etc. . Aluminum coatings are divided into two groups based on the forming mechanism: 1. High-active coatings. 2. Low-active coatings. High-performance coatings comprise the penetration of the Al element into the interior and the formation of the Ni2Al3 phase at the sample surface at a temperature of 750 to 900 degrees Celsius. Low-active coatings comprise the penetration of the Ni element to the outside and the formation of the NiAl phase at the sample surface at a temperature of 950 to 1100 ° C. Low-active coatings comprise the penetration of the Ni element to the outside and the formation of the NiAl phase at the sample surface. Accordingly, with the penetration of the Ni element from the sample surface, a poor layer of Ni is obtained under the coating layer.
