ABSTRACT
Mechanical activation in a low-energy mill was carried out on a mixture of silica powder and petroleum coke with a molar ratio of one to three to produce silicon carbide. Increasing the milling operation time resulted in fine particles and better coating of silica particles by carbon and the size of the particles reduced to below micron. Mechanical activation led to a significant reduction in the temperature of the formation of silicon carbide. By increasing the heating temperature from 1150 ° C to 1500 ° C, the reaction rate increased significantly.
INTRODUCTION
Due to its high strength properties, thermal conductivity and excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation, silicon carbide has a wide range of applications at high temperatures and in composites. The most commonly used method for producing silicon carbide powder is the AXS method on an industrial scale. In this method, the process of thermal regeneration of silica particles is carried out by carbon powder at a temperature of about 2000 to 3000 ° C and at a time of about one to seven days. The silicon carbide powder obtained from this method is due to the high temperature and long response times of the coarse grains, and to reach the size of a few microns and below the micron, a large amount of milling is needed, which leads to the introduction of contaminants into the final product, the production of the product With low purity and increased energy consumption. Other methods have also been used to produce silicon carbide, for example gas-reactive gas, polyethylene pyrolysis, water extraction in the environment, laser-aggravated gas reaction, and sol-gel process. The high-temperature self-propagating SHS synthesis is also one of the methods for producing silicon carbide powder. Theoretically, in order to carry out the process itself, the progressive temperature should be higher than the limit. The adiabatic temperature calculated for the Si / C system is lower than the minimum required temperature for self-propagating reaction. Hence, an additional energy source is needed to trigger a self-sustaining reaction. This additional energy source can react with pre-heaters of reactants or create high pressure by using the nitrogen atmosphere as the driving force behind the reaction. Precoat application due to the problem of evaporation and the loss of silicon during slow heating, leads to an incomplete process. The use of nitrogen also causes pressure on the system, which leads to increased costs.
