ABSTRACT
This study reviews the effects of freezing and melting cycles on the permeability coefficient of dense clay and geocynthetic clay insulators that are used in environmental pollution control structures, such as waste engineering engineering. As the number of cycles increases, ice lenses are formed inside the soil, and with the temperature gradient increasing, the number of lenses in the camel is increased and the soil permeability coefficient increases. In one study, the effect of 12 cycles of freezing and melting on water permeability in RCE-GC (GCLs) used in a barrier to transmission of contamination caused an increase of 30% permeability. Also, the replacement of Jet A-1 fuel instead of water as a penetrating solution resulted in a low insulating permeability. GCL specimens were exposed to more than 100 freeze-thaw cycles, and the average permeability of GCL compared to water before freezing and melting was 3 / 3-10-10 / 11 m / s. Mean permeability was not significantly changed after more than 100 freezing-melting cycles, and in the range of 2 x 10-11 m / s up to 11.5-3 / 10-11 m / s. The results show that the GCL continues to function well as a hydraulic barrier when exposed to severe climatic conditions both in the laboratory and in the desert.
INTRODUCTION
Dense clays and GCL layers are often used as hydraulic barriers to prevent fluid flow. The use of dense clay and GCL layers can be used in waste garbage, water and sewage pools and coatings. Due to the fact that the main application of dense clay and GCL layers is to minimize the flow of fluid flow, the low permeability coefficient is of great importance. Therefore, you should protect the harmful conditions that may affect their permeability. The increase in the permeability coefficient created by freezing will depend on the profile of the cracks created. These specifications depend on several internal conditions, including the number of freezing and melting cycles, freezing depth, temperature gradient, and stress state. In this paper, the coefficient of permeability of dense clay exposed to freezing and alternating melting to water and permeability coefficient of GCL layers exposed to freezing and alternating melting compared to water and fuel Jet A-1 have been reviewed.
