ABSTRACT
Aluminum A356 foams were produced in a closed cell with the addition of gas-producing materials (titanium hydride) to the melt. In this paper, the effect of temperature and time of foaming and the amount of titanium hydride added, was studied on the foam density and cellular structure of the components. The foaming process was carried out at temperatures in the range of 650-750 degrees centigrade and at foaming times of 30 seconds to 2 minutes, adding 1-2% by weight of titanium hydride. Foam produced under different foaming conditions has cells with a mean size of 4-8 / 2 mm, relative density of 0.4-0.35, and porosity of 55-70%. It was observed that foams produced at 700 ° C with a foaming time of 1 min and a titanium hydride of 5.1%, had a more homogeneous cell structure and less defects than the rest of the samples. With increasing foaming temperature, the amount of titanium hydride and foaming time, cell size and porosity increased, and the density of foam decreased.
INTRODUCTION
Metal foams are a group of cellular materials in which gas bubbles are separated by thin metal walls, and the volume fraction of porosity is very high. In recent years, there has been a high demand for low-grade metal foams in the automotive, railway, and aerospace industries. In aluminum foams, aluminum foams have become more widely used in light weight structures and energy-absorbent components due to its low density and high energy absorption. The two main processes for the production of aluminum foam include melt foaming and powder metallurgy. The melt foaming method, which involves the addition of a gas-to-molten agent, due to its low cost, is more suitable for commercial applications. The chemical composition of the base alloy and cellular structure of foam has a significant effect on the physical and mechanical properties of aluminum foams. In the process of foaming, the structure of the melt foam varies widely during the process, which is why it is difficult to control the structure of aluminum foam. For foam stability and non-degradation of the cell, the foaming process uses ceramic particles such as SiC and Al2O3. Of course, in some aluminum alloys, without the use of these particles, foams can be produced, but in most studies, these particles have been used.
