ABSTRACT
Among the theories in the field of social deviance, Robert Agnio’s theory of public pressure has gained considerable credibility over the past two decades. In this theory, the cause of divergent behaviors such as alcohol use is related to negative emotions, such as depression and anger. Nowadays, the consumption of alcohol and other illicit substances by students is one of the most important mental health issues that some countries in the world are partly involved with. The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ attitude toward alcohol consumption. The research method was survey and the data collection tool was a questionnaire. The research population consists of all students of Mazandaran University. In total, 467 students (309 girls and 158 boys) were selected through stratified random sampling. The theoretical framework of the research has been Agnio’s general pressure theory. The findings show that there is a significant difference between boys and girls in terms of alcohol consumption. Boys tend to drink more alcohol than girls, but there is no significant difference between girls and boys in negative emotions such as anger and depression. The findings of the study did not substantiate the theory of pressure theory, and the results only confirmed the hypotheses that the presence of negative stimuli and anger influenced attitudes toward alcohol use.
