ABSTRACT
In this paper, a methodology to perform the optimal unit sizing for Distributed Energy Resources (DRE) in MicroGid (MG), is developed. Based on a genetic algorithm, one optimal sizing method was developed to calculate the optimum system configuration that can achieve the customers required loss of power supply probability (LPSP) with a minimum COE. The proposed method results are validated for single source DG and hybrid DG with results obtained from HOMER for the same systems.
INTRODUCTION
The resource limitation of fossil fuels and the problems arising from their combustion has led to widespread research on the accessibility of new and renewable energy resources. Solar, wind, thermal and hydro sources, and finally biogas are among these renewable energy resources. Utilization of solar and wind power has become increasingly significant, attractive and cost-effective, since the oil crises of early 1970s. However, common drawback with solar and wind energy is their unpredictable nature. Standalone photovoltaic (PV) or wind energy system, do not produce demand energy for considerable portion of time during the year. This is mainly due to dependence on sunshine hours, which are variable. In general, the variations of solar and wind energy do not match with the time distribution of demand. The independent use of both the systems results in considerable over-sizing for system reliability, which in turn makes the design costly. Moreover, unlike other forms of renewable energy, biogas neither has any geographical limitations nor required technology for producing energy and nor is it complex or monopolistic. Considering the ever increasing amount of different types of organic waste materials (about 15 million tons in year) in Iran, working on the control of waste material and biogas production becomes inevitable . Nowadays, the increasing reliability and diversity of fuel mix along the efficient conversion management of DER resources paved the way for creating a micro grid (MG) generating and distribution domain . From utility perspective, a MG is an electrical load that can be controlled in magnitude. Such controllable load may be constant, may increase during the night and the off-peak loads when electricity is cheaper, and it may be held at zero during times of system stress.
