Serious Games in Physical Rehabilitation

Without computers anything of this would be possible! The growth of the computational power of modern computers is exponential implying continuously increasing progress in the gaming industry as well. The frst computer—the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer)—has been built in 1946 and occupied a full room for a weight of 30 Tons. The computer games evolved from early days of computers and forked from research applications like simulations and demonstrations developed to entertain the public. In 70 years, the computational power has been drastically increasing and we moved from text-based games to realistic virtual and immersive environments. However, considering the exponential growth, in a few decades will people look at the current games the same way as we look to the “Pong” or the “Pacman.” In parallel to this growth, the size and the price of the technology is decreasing at the same rate. The frst microprocessor was built in 1971; since that date the power of processors have been increasing exponentially. Moore’s law stipulated that the power of computer is doubled every 18 months since every innovation boosts the creation of new products (Moore 1965). The increase of power calculation allowed the development of applications requiring a lot of computational power such as visual graphics, particularly important for the development of video games.

Evidence-Based Physical Diagnosis

The purpose of this book is to explore the origins, pathophysiology, and diagnostic accuracy of many of the physical signs currently used in adult patients. We have a wonderfully rich tradition of physical diagnosis, and my hope is that this book will help to square this tradition, now almost two centuries old, with the realities of modern diagnosis, which often rely more on technologic tests, such as clinical imaging and laboratory testing. The tension between physical diagnosis and technologic tests has never been greater. Having taught physical diagnosis for 20 years, I frequently observe medical students purchasing textbooks of physical diagnosis during their preclinical years, to study and master traditional physical signs, but then neglecting or even discarding this knowledge during their clinical years, after observing that modern diagnosis often takes place at a distance from the bedside. One can hardly fault a student who, caring for a patient with pneumonia, does not talk seriously about crackles and diminished breath sounds when all of his teachers are focused on the subtleties of the patient’s chest radiograph. Disregard for physical diagnosis also pervades our residency programs, most of which have formal x-ray rounds, pathology rounds, microbiology rounds, and clinical conferences addressing the nuances of laboratory tests. Very few have formal physical diagnosis rounds.

Chemical and Physical Procedures

Chemical Peels may be defined as “controlled wounds” of the skin made by the dermatologist to multiple purposes. They are classified as superficial, medium, and deep according to the depth of penetration of the chemical solution. The deepest the peelings, the best results and the greatest range of complications. Superficial chemical peels are useful procedures to enhance the appearance of the skin with fast results and little or no downtime. They are appropriate to all skin phototypes. Retinoic acid is a well-established agent in the treatment of acne from the 1960s and photoaged skin, and it has been used for this purpose since the 1980s. Photoaged skin is characterized by wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, laxity, and loss of brightness ,among other alterations. For the last decades, retinoic acid has been used in higher concentrations for superficial peelings as an effective and safe tool for the dermatologist. This chapter will drive you through the stages and techniques of this peeling step by step based on my 30 years of personal experience and medical literature.
