ABSTRACT
Solvent extraction of nickel by LIX 984N diluted in kerosene at different concentrations and temperatures has been investigated. According to the %E-pH curves LIX 984N (20 vol.%) extracts nickel in the pH range between 2.5 up to 5. An increase in LIX 984N concentration from 10 to 60 vol.% the value of pH0.5 decreases from 4.1 to 3.25. The stoichiometric coefficients of LIX 984N in nickel extraction reaction is determined by applying the slope-analysis method. It is experimentally confirmed that 1.0 of nickel will be extracted by 3 mol of LIX 984N. It is predicted that an organic complex is formed by LIX 984N during the extraction of nickel ion. Also, nickel extraction with LIX 984N is an endothermic reaction. So nickel extraction percent curves shifts to left at elevated temperature. Employing SPSS software for windows V. 8.0 and analyzing whole data, final and modified equations for the nickel distribution and apparent ∆Go has been computed
INTRODUCTION
Nickel recovery is achieved by hydrometallurgy from various sources such as oxide and sulfide sources, waste catalysts, batteries, or metal industry dust. These materials are dissolved in sulfuric acid or chloride acid and their solution is used in the nickel recovery process. Also, these solutions contain other ions that are treated by the solvent extraction process. Sedimentation methods, like the solvent extraction method, are not capable of retrieving and treating these metals. Extensive studies in this area show that solvent extraction is one of the most effective methods for the recovery of nickel from secondary sources. In a research done by Donegan, it was found that nickel extraction can be done using 15% vosaric acid 10 and 45 ° C, in which extraction starts at pH = 5 and ends at pH = 8. In another study, it has been shown that extractor PC 88A extracts less than 20% nickel at pH = 6.5. Similar results were observed for concentrations of 0.2, 15.0 and 25.0 M PC 88A. Ramachandra Reddy et al. Investigated the separation and recovery of nickel from a sulfate ligation solution using phosphorus group extracts such as yanex, TOPS 99 Cyanex 302, Cyanex 272, 923 and Cyanex 301 diluted in Crust. They found the best results from the Cyanex 301 extractors, in which 50% nickel was extracted at pH = 3.
