ABSTRACT
Mg / SiC composites consisted of 0-20% volumetric SiC particles using powder metallurgy method including press and hot extrusion. The effect of SiC particles on the density, microstructure, hardness and wear behavior of pure magnesium was studied. Paired-wear abrasion tests were performed by applying loads of 6, 12 and 18 N, and a slip rate of 12-12 m / s at ambient temperature. Microscopic studies using optical microscopy showed the homogeneous distribution of SiC particles in the magnesium field. The dominant abrasive mechanism was determined by studying surface and abrasive particles by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that friction coefficient increased at all times by increasing SiC, but the lowest wear rate in the sample containing 5% SiC was obtained. Microscopic studies of abrasive surfaces showed that the mechanism of wear in pure magnesium changed with the increase of the applied load from the combination of scratch and trowel wear to the abrasive wear. In composites containing 10 and 20% volumetric SiC, the increase in applied force resulted in the activation of the slip wearing mechanism and the loss of volume.
INTRODUCTION
Application of metallic metal composites is increasing in many fields of industry due to its good physical and mechanical properties compared to conventional metals and alloys. On the one hand, magnesium alloys have attracted much attention in the scientific and industrial sectors, such as aerospace and transportation, due to their low density and high strength. However, the wear resistance of magnesium alloys is low and need to be strengthened with ceramic particles.
