ABSTRACT
this paper presents a systematic design procedure based on H ∞ optimization technique for damping low frequency electromechanical oscillations in a HVDC link for a wide range of operation conditions. It is shown that the suggested method can improve the dynamic stability of system and it can perfectly consider the uncertainties of the power system. The simulation results verify the capability of the suggested method and designed controller.
INTRODUCTION
With rapid growth of electric power systems, the needs for interconnection between ‘areas’ of generation increased to maximize the efficiency of generation and distribution. With interconnection of large scale electric power systems, many new dynamic power system problems have been emerged, which include low frequency inter system oscillations, the subsynchronous torsional oscillations of turbines in steam electric power plants and many others. These oscillations are due to the dynamics of inter-area power transfer and often exhibit poor damping where the aggregate power transfer over a corridor is high relative to the transmission strength. As utilities increase power exchange over a fixed network, low frequency oscillations are more likely to happen, even under nominal operation conditions. While power system stabilizers (PSSs) remain the main damping method, there is an increasing interest in using HVDC devices to aid the damping of these oscillations. It is well known that power modulation of DC links can be used to enhance the stability of power system, the several HVDC-scheme in operation are utilized to provide additional damping to the power system. The DC links ability of oscillation damping in AC systems by the power modulation of DC link, which is known as DCM (DC Modulation). This is achievable, due to the inherent fast of AC/DC power converters . Some conventional methods have been used in pervious researches designing such a supplementary damping controller (SDC) for design a DCM.
