ABSTRACT
Discrete Element Method (DEM) was first introduced by Cundall. In this method, the granular environment is considered as a set of separated particles, not in the form of a continuous medium, and analyzed. Saturated granular soils form a two-phase envelope; a solid phase (a discrete phase) that forms a porous network in a randomized form, and a liquid phase (continuous phase) that fills the pores between solid particles. Such soils exhibit a very complex nonlinear behavior. This behavior stems from the complex interactions of the particle with the particle and the fluid on the particle. In this paper, we try to model such an environment based on the discrete components method and to apply some changes to it in order to consider the continuous fluid environment and its effects. A two-dimensional model was used to study the behavior of saturated grain environments. The two-dimensional model is implemented using the PFC2D software and its internal programming language (FISH). In normal mode, this software can only model dry particles (regardless of cavity pressure) and therefore can not model the cavity fluid and its effects on the behavior of saturated grain environments. In this study, the effects of cavity fluid in the inter-particle environment were studied using FISH programming and a change in the basic program. The saturated grain environment is considered as a set of circular particles and fluid between particles. The forces due to fluid-particle interaction are calculated by valid quasi-experimental relationships. At the end of the experiment, a bi-directional cutting experiment was simulated.
INTRODUCTION
Saturated grains consist of two discrete (continuous) particles (cavernous fluid). When loading saturated sands, due to the presence of forces due to the interaction between two discrete and continuous phases, soil sample behavior is often complicated and not easily predictable. An appropriate method for predicting the saturated sand response is numerical simulation. In order for a numerical model to be able to predict the behavior of saturated sand, it is necessary to consider the discrete sand-like nature along with the continuous behavior of the cavity fluid (hybrid method).
