ABSTRACT
TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by titanium isoprooxide 97% hydrolysis at different pHs and the resulting colloidal suspension was subjected to desalinization for 18 to 20 hours. The resulting powder after descaling and before the heat treatment contains small anatase particles with a mean size of 10 nm. The subsequent heat treatment at temperatures of 200-800 ºC for 2 hours showed that anatase is the only stable phase up to 400 ºC and then, at 600 ºC, both anatase and rutile phases are present. Finally, at 800 ºC, the powder will have a completely rutile phase. The amount of rutile phase and conversion percentage was determined at 600 ºC and it was shown that the anatase-rutile transformation not only depends on the size of the primary crystallites, but also depends on factors such as agglomeration and the percentage of the broucate phase in the powder. This means that among samples of similar particle size, the presence of agglomeration and the depletion brook phase will be affected. In these experiments, the samples were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM electron microscope.
INTRODUCTION
Different structures result in different physical properties and thus different applications. Anatase, for example, is commonly used because of the high photoreactivity for photocatalytic applications, and rutile is used as pigment because of the effective diffusion of light. Undoubtedly, the anatase degradation of the semi-stable to stable rutile during thermal treatment will often be accompanied by a decrease in the surface area of the particles, thereby reducing the catalytic capability. Therefore, it is possible to synthesize anatase, rutile or a mixture of these two phases at low temperatures, without the use of additives, from a technological and scientific point of view. Therefore, understanding the mechanism and factors affecting phase stability and fuzzy transformation is important for designing and controlling phase type and its concentration for different applications. The transformation behavior is determined by the method of preparation, the particle size, the initial impurity, the initial phase, the atmospheric concentration, the temperature, the pressure, and so on. Although the rutile is thermodynamically stable, the thermodynamic stability depends on the size of the particle, and for the particles smaller than ≈14 nm, the anatase is more stable than the rutile.
