ABSTRACT
In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model was developed to predict the depth of carbon diffused, from the surface of work piece, in irregular shaped pusher gas carburizing reactor. The profile of the gas velocity and temperature were also predicted. The mathematical model was based on the steady, threedimensional laminar transport equations describing the conservation of mass, momentum, heat and species. These equations were discretized using a control-volume based finite-difference (CVFD) method over a nonorthogonal boundary-fitted coordinate (BFC) domain. The discretized algebraic equations were solved numerically using a semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations revised (SIMPLER) algorithm. The validity and the accuracy of the numerical model developed in this study was verified by comparing the predicted results from the model with the experimental data of the carbon diffusion depth reported in the literature. It was found that the predicted results were in good agreement with experimental data.
INTRODUCTION
Gas Carbonation is a heat treatment method that is used to harden the surface of low carbon steel parts. In this method, the carbon produced from methane gas decomposition at high critical temperature Ac (usually between 850 to 950 ° C) sits on the surface of the unit and penetrates it in depth. Due to carbon penetration and the formation of carbide at the surface of the unit, the stiffness and wear resistance of the piece are increased, although the depth of the component does not change in terms of mechanical properties. The process is used in various industries such as automotive, automotive, defense, and so on. Gas-fired carbon furnaces are divided into continuous and discontinuous categories.
