ABSTRACT
Surface pure titanium alloys were commercially used using pure tungsten arc process (TIG) on pure commercial titanium in argon and nitrogen gas and surface composite layer was created by selecting optimal process variables. X-ray diffraction studies, X-ray microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that crystalline structures based on the TiN hard phase are present in the alloy surface layer. Freezing morphology is dominant and includes TiN dendrites in the field of titanium martensite. The alloying layer produced with optimum parameters, hardness up to about 1000HV. Also, the evaluation of abrasion resistance of superficial composite and substrate titanium specimens indicates abrasion rate and a much less frictional coefficient of the surface alloy sample. These cases are attributed to the presence of the crystalline structures mentioned in the surface composite layer.
INTRODUCTION
Titanium and its alloys have many applications in the industry due to properties such as strength to weight ratio, good corrosion resistance and low density. One of the most important applications is the use of them in body and aircraft engines, medical instruments, chemical process equipment and consumer applications. One of the disadvantages of titanium alloys is their poorly trilogue properties, which has caused their use limitation. Researches have been carried out to improve the tribological properties of titanium and its alloys in recent years, in which different methods have been used to improve the abrasion resistance and surface hardness of these alloys. For example, the use of chemical and physical vapor deposition methods and ionization by accelerating nitrogen ions on the surface of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy cause the formation of surface layers containing hardened phases. The formation of thicker layers of surface melting of pure commercial titanium was possible with laser beam in nitrogen gas and hardening phases were formed based on TiN and Ti2N. In the present study, pure titanium superalloying was performed by tungsten arc process in nitrogen-containing media to achieve a higher alloying surface with hardness and abrasion resistance than the titanium substrate. Commercial pure titanium sheets with dimensions of 100mm × 25mm and thickness of 7mm were used for the substrate. Initially, the under-layer surfaces were washed with alcohol and acetone in an ultrasound machine.
