Building Automation

The level of automation in residential and commercial buildings has risen steadily over the years. This is not only due to the increasing demand for more comfort and convenience, but also the benefits building automation brings with regard to saving and managing energy. Security is another important factor, particularly in residential buildings. Whereas in commercial buildings flexibility is high on the agenda – offices buildings, for example, should be designed in such way that they can be easily adapted to meet any change in use or requirements.

Communication Facilities for Distributed Transaction-Processing Systems

Distributed transaction-processing systems must manage such functions as concurrency, recovery, and replication. One way to improve their efficiency and reliability is to increase software modularity, which means the separate components should execute in separate address spaces to permit hardware-enforced separation. This structure offers advantages but demands efficient interprocess communication (IPC) services. In our research at Purdue University, we are investigating mechanisms and paradigms for efficient communication support in conventional architectures, such as virtual-memory, single-processor machines with no special IPC hardware support. (Some mainframes have hardware assistance where more than one address space can be accessed at the same time.) We are studying communication designs in the context of the Raid system, a robust and adaptable distributed database system for transaction processing.' Raid has been developed at Purdue on Sun workstations under the Unix operating Communication svstem in a local area network. software is critical in distributed computing systems. This research identifies efficient mechanisms and paradigms for distributed transaction processing in a replicated database environment. In Raid, each major logical component is implemented as a server, which is a process in a separate address space. Servers interact with other processes through a high-level communication subsystem. Currently, Raid has six servers for transaction management: the user interface (UI). the action driver (AD), the access manager (AM), the atomicity controller (AC), the concurrency controller (CC), and the replication controller (RC). High-level name service is provided by a separate server, the oracle.

Social Media and Strategic Communication: Attitudes and Perceptions Among College Students

Social media have been adopted from its inception by public relations, advertising and marketing practitioners as tools for communicating with strategic publics. Wright and Hinson (2009) have established that public relations professionals perceive social media positively with respect to strategic communication. Given that social media are having an impact on professionals in the industry, the current study examined if social media are having a similar impact on college students in general and students studying in the area of public relations and advertising. The uses, attitudes and perceptions of social media among college students were explored through survey data.

Asian multiculturalism in communication: Impact of culture in the practice of public relations in Singapore

This study aims to understand the role of cultural values in influencing public relations practice in Singapore. Given that Singapore exhibits a hybrid of cultures, it purposes to comprehend how multiculturalism is operationalized and to uncover if the values that have a greater influence on organizational communication resemble those in individualistic or collectivistic societies. Using Gudykunst’s (1998) seven dimensions that influence individualism-collectivism on communication as a guide, this study interviewed 20 public relations practitioners in Singapore. Our findings showed that although the patterns expressed is slightly more consistent with those found in collectivistic cultures, it does not resemble collectivism in entirety. Multiculturalism in Singapore displays a blend of certain cultural hybridity, which is aligned with it being a multicultural cosmopolitan city that embodies Western modernity while retaining its Asian values. Our findings further reinforced the idea that public relations professionals need to be multicultural themselves to effectively communicate with culturally diverse stakeholders in today’s globalizing era of multiculturalism.

A systematic review of economic analyses of telehealth services using real time video communication

Background: Telehealth is the delivery of health care at a distance, using information and communication technology. The major rationales for its introduction have been to decrease costs, improve efficiency and increase access in health care delivery. This systematic review assesses the economic value of one type of telehealth delivery - synchronous or real time video communication - rather than examining a heterogeneous range of delivery modes as has been the case with previous reviews in this area. Methods: A systematic search was undertaken for economic analyses of the clinical use of telehealth, ending in June 2009. Studies with patient outcome data and a non-telehealth comparator were included. Cost analyses, noncomparative studies and those where patient satisfaction was the only health outcome were excluded. Results: 36 articles met the inclusion criteria. 22(61%) of the studies found telehealth to be less costly than the non-telehealth alternative, 11(31%) found greater costs and 3 (9%) gave the same or mixed results. 23 of the studies took the perspective of the health services, 12 were societal, and one was from the patient perspective. In three studies of telehealth to rural areas, the health services paid more for telehealth, but due to savings in patient travel, the societal perspective demonstrated cost savings. In regard to health outcomes, 12 (33%) of studies found improved health outcomes, 21 (58%) found outcomes were not significantly different, 2(6%) found that telehealth was less effective, and 1 (3%) found outcomes differed according to patient group. The organisational model of care was more important in determining the value of the service than the clinical discipline, the type of technology, or the date of the study.

Quantum message exchanging network using entanglement swapping and decoy photons

We propose a scheme for secure quantum message exchanging network following the idea in entanglement swapping. In this scheme, the servers of the network provide the service for preparing the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states as quantum channels. For preventing the eavesdropping, a security checking method is suggested. After the security check, anyone of the authorized users can exchange his/her messages with another on the network securely and directly.
