ABSTRACT
Shear stress distribution is one of the hydraulic characteristics in open channels. Modeling the shear stress distribution is difficult due to the presence of secondary currents. In this paper, using the coherent mapping, we determine the unpolluted equations of the velocity curves and the expelled orthogonal curves on them (orthogonals). The property of orthogonals is that the gradient of velocity in their direction is zero, so they can be called zero shear stresses. Also, the water content of the water between two orthogonal and a boundary is neutralized by the shear stresses created in this region. In the following, we study the shear stress of the floor and the wall in smooth trapezoidal channels. Comparing the results of this study with other researchers’ methods shows that the present method has a good accuracy.
INTRODUCTION
Shear stress distribution is always important as a major parameter in the design of open channels. This parameter is applicable to various issues such as water transmission, open channels, sediment transport, erosion and river geomorphology. One of the effective parameters in the shear stress distribution in the channels is the channel geometry, which can lead to the formation or intensification of secondary currents in the canal. Secondary currents are velocity vectors that occur in the flow section or axis perpendicular to the flow direction and make up about 2 to 3 percent of the average flow velocity. The separation of the shear stresses of the bed and the wall is also very important. For example, wall shear stress is one of the variables in the velocity distribution equation. To estimate the transfer of bed loading, the shear stress of the floor should be separated from the shear stress. The study of shear stress in sediment transport in rivers and canals has a relatively long history and many studies have begun in this field since the nineteenth century. However, due to the nature of stress, there is no comprehensive study on the distribution of stress. Ghosh and (1970) Roy indirectly and using a pitot tube, calculated the shear stress of the walls in trapezoidal channels. And (1988) Knight proposed a methodology for estimating the average depth and shear stress of the wall, known as 2SKM.
