ABSTRACT
In this study, the microstructure of two types of ductile iron (containing 3-3.3 percent carbon and about 4.2 percent silicon) was investigated in two systems of Fe-C-Si and Fe-C-Si-2% Al by means of electron microscopy (SEM). . A 7-step staircase model was used for casting. In this research, stairs with thickness of 40, 20 and 50 mm were studied. Austenite operation at 925 ° C for 2 hours and austemper operation at two temperatures of 315 ° C and 370 ° C for 2 hours. The results showed that by adding 2 wt% aluminum to ductile iron, a structure with compact graphite is formed. Also, studies on the microstructure of both types of cast iron indicate the formation of low viscosity blades at a temperature of 315 ° C and high viscosity plates at 370 ° C. However, the structure formed in the Fe-C-Si-Al system is more delicate than that obtained from the Fe-C-Si system. Also, the obtained images indicate that the perlite phase does not exist in the structure of the sample containing aluminum of high thickness, which is due to increasing austemperability.
INTRODUCTION
The optimal mechanical properties of Austemper unbreakable castors are directly related to the amount and type of viscosity and austenite formed in their structure during the austemper operation. Conventional unbreakable cast iron contains about 3 percent silicon in which silicon acts as a strong graphite element and prevents carbide deposition. Up until about two decades, spherical graphite appeared only in the Fe-C-Si system to produce a “spherical graphite” in the “Fe-C-Al” system in the year “Ghoreshi”, 1983 and “Kondic”. Subsequently, studies by other researchers also indicate the possibility of producing spheroidal graphite pig iron in the Fe-C-Al system. However, some studies also indicate the formation of compact graphite in this system. In recent years, considerable research has been done on aluminum-cast iron. The behavior of aluminum and silicon in metallurgically non-ductile iron shows similar similarities. Aluminum, like silicon, is dissolved mainly in austenite and ferrite and soluble in carbide a little. Both elements increase the eutectic temperature, which is higher for aluminum.
