ABSTRACT
The phenomenon of soil divergence can cause irreparable damage to civil engineering projects and environmental projects. On the other hand, despite previous extensive studies on the factors affecting divergence behavior, the role of anions has been less considered. Accordingly, in this study, using clay montmorillonite and electrolytes containing different anionic sodium cations, the effect of the type of anion on the divergence potential and soil engineering properties was studied in laboratory conditions. The results indicate that the proximity of soil with low sodium cation concentrations increases the divergence and growth of microscopic cavities and decreases the divergence with increasing electrolyte concentration. It was observed that at concentrations with maximum particle dispersion and changing the type of anion, the divergence of more than 30% and the water holding capacity by clay particles varied by about 20%. Indeed, the exchange of anions, by changing the pH and increasing the potential load of clay plates, can create a new geometry of particle arrangement and soil properties change. An electron microscope (SEM) image confirms the change in the microstructure of the soil after interacting with various electrolytes and shows how the clay surfaces lie alongside each other as a function of the electrolyte concentration and the type of anion adjacent to the soil. According to the results, consideration of the effect of all the properties of the porous liquid, including type of anions on the soil divergence mechanism, is one of the important points in the reliability of the earth-water structures.
INTRODUCTION
Geotechnical engineering views divergent clays are problematic soils that lose their adhesion in the vicinity of water and erode with the dispersion of particles around them. Erosion due to soil divergence is gradually expanded and can lead to problems such as inefficiency of the project or even its destruction in structures such as earth dams and irrigation canals. In the event of divergent materials used to build road dams, rainfall causes scalded scourges, so in the 1990s, a significant portion of the Oklahoma highway was damaged by the occurrence of such a situation and caused a lot of financial damage. In addition to the above, the tendency to particle dispersion and scaling may reduce the safe performance of the protective layers of landfill sites and result in the release of abundant amounts of pollution to the surrounding environment.
