ABSTRACT
In this study, indium and lead were used to create solid lubricant coatings on steel samples. Coating was done by physical vapor deposition (PVD) and by ionization and evaporation processes, and the tribological behavior of the coatings was evaluated using a pin-disc test. The results of the experiments showed that the coatings reduce the friction coefficient to less than 1/1. In the meantime, ionic sediment coatings exhibit more lubrication and evaporation than vacuum evaporation coatings. Intimate coatings cause a lower friction factor due to easy cutting but shorter wear and tear life than lead. In addition to lead and lead, in-30% Pb, In-10% Pb and In-50% Pb alloy coatings were created by ion deposition method, which showed that the lubrication and wear properties of the oven are between indium and pure lead coatings.
INTRODUCTION
Lubrication is a process in which the frictional forces between two solid objects that move relative to each other are reduced, resulting in the removal of material at the surface (wear) and energy depletion (friction). Soft metals such as Indium and Pb, due to numerous slip plates and low shear strength, reduce the friction and motion of the slider when slipping between the sliding surfaces; therefore, these materials can be used as solid lubricants. Solid metallic lubricants in high temperature and vacuum environments, which are capable of decomposition and evaporation of fluid lubricants, show better performance than harmful radiation and have high electrical conductivity and high thermal conductivity. The first application of soft lubrication coatings for axes used in the air industry has been used, but now these coatings are used in all types of gear wheels, bearings and axles in the packaging and paper and fabric industries which have a risk of contamination with fluid lubricants. The results of previous studies have shown that iodine and lead ion coatings on lubrication steel and wear are suitable for wear. In recent research, various lead-based alloy coatings have been produced by electrochemical methods. Among them, lead-copper-copper alloy has the highest frictional wear resistance and lead-indium alloy.
