ABSTRACT
The crumbling dams are among the hydraulic structures that, in flood conditions, reduce the flow through the flow through the control and evacuation of the part of the inlet flow volume. The most important characteristics of the lagoon dams are permeability and the ability to pass water and sediments in the water from within it, especially during the river flood. To maintain this characteristic, especially during the river flood, the design of these dams should be done in such a way that the existing hydraulic gradient is always above its critical value for the transfer of sediments from these dams. In this research, by conducting experiments on a rocky dam, the relationship between the critical hydraulic gradient of non-sticky sediment transport in tiled rock dams has been investigated and an exponential relation has been obtained for this in turbulent flow conditions. Also, the comparison of the results obtained from the experiments for the critical hydraulic gradients and the results of the obtained relationship was drawn, which shows the high correlation coefficient of the presented relationships and the good matching of these two series of results.
INTRODUCTION
Seasonal floods annually cause significant damage to fertile fields adjacent to rivers, as well as existing facilities in those areas. As a result, flood control is one of the important issues in river engineering. Delayed dam lagoon is one of the flood control structures in rivers that are created by decomposing rocky materials from riverside or rock mines. These dams can play an important role in reducing the damaging effects of the flood due to delays in peak flood. The most important characteristics of these dams are the permeability and the ability to pass water and sediments in the water from within it, especially during the river flood. A very important point in designing these dams is that the permeability of these dams does not decrease dramatically with time and after the occurrence of floods. To maintain this feature, the design of these dams should be done in such a way that the existing hydraulic gradient is above the critical hydraulic gradient necessary for the transfer of sediments from these dams. Therefore, it is important to determine the critical hydraulic gradient of sediment transport in these dams.
